Crossing Lines

"Crossing Lines" plays with a brush stroke's potential to trigger social and cultural meaning.

"I was fascinated by the situation, that I wasn't able to paint crossing lines without seeing a christian cross. The liberation of the brush stroke is a constant theme in my work and therefore I had to practice painting lines crossing each other while liberating my mind from seeing any symbol or cultural meaning in it."

The 7 Days Paintings

2021

Painting abstract you can see as a chronology of brush strokes related to each other. Inspired by the desire for a pure and independent brush stroke, I created the exercise of the 7 days paintings. The rules: I apply only on single brush stroke at the time and I'm not allowed to add another one before the next day. As a result I succeeded to exclude the instinctive creative impulse of reacting to the visual element, which I just applied. The 7 days paintings show a chronology of 7 brush strokes, which are liberated from each other and depict nothing else than a singular act.

The Dynamic of existence

2020

“There is no reality except in action.” And: “…he (man) is therefore nothing else than the ensemble of his acts....”Jean-Paul Sartre (Existentialism is a Humanism)

This project was inspired by the mindset of liberating the brush stroke from the purpose of representing anything beyond itself and went one step further. I used the most simple way of applying paint to the canvas - my fingerprint, which is usually a tool to identify an individual existence. And so do these fingerprints on the canvas. The brush stroke is replaced by the act and each act shapes my existence. These chronologies of actions are proofs of the dynamic of an existence and so counteract the static purpose of a fingerprint to identify a human existence.
